The Saturn Neptune opposition of 2006/2007

The most significant planetary energy for 2006 will be Saturn opposing Neptune on August 31, 2006.  Symbolically speaking, Saturn and Neptune are essentially opposites. Saturn represents established institutions and traditions, the forces that regulate, control and govern society. Neptune represents spirituality and escapism, idealism, propaganda and paranoia. In mundane astrology, Saturn rules business, government and laws, whereas Neptune rules religion, oil and gas, diseases and deception.

This cycle began to set up when Saturn entered Leo opposing  Aquarius, July 2005 and continues until Saturn finally exits Leo, which will be September 2, 2007.  The exact dates of the opposition will be the most powerful periods for the coming challenges on August 31, February 28, 2007 and finally: June 25, 2007. The last opposition was August 1971 that coincided with the higher price of gasoline, and the growing anger in the oil-producing Middle East toward US government policies and actions. Scandal forced Nixon to resign to avoid impeachment.

These next 2 years will bring the need for major changes that will include overhauling our immigration policy, creating new energy resources, resolving the Iraq War, fighting increasing terrorism, confronting disease and more powerful weather conditions because of global warming.  All issues that we have been avoiding or ignorant.

The following are some of the challenges that reflected the lessons of Saturn and Neptune combinations over the past 100 years.  History tends to repeat itself when ignored.

1899-1900 Opposition

On September 8, 1900 during the first Saturn-Neptune opposition of the 20th Century, the deadliest hurricane in US history claimed more than 6,000 lives in Galveston, Texas. Katrina was last year, what is in store for this season?

1917 Conjunction

The Russian Revolution started on February 23, 1917 when Czar Nicholas II was overthrown and executed, along with his wife and children. The Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 swept the globe, infecting one fifth of the world's population and taking over 25 million lives.

1936-1937 Opposition

1936-1938, the Soviet government's Great Purge under Joseph Stalin was at its peak. During this brief period, mass arrests and trials were carried out and millions were imprisoned, executed or sent into exile. Hitler was coming into power and Europe and the United States were in the throes of the Great Depression.

1952-1953 Conjunction

In December 1952, a "killer fog" descended on London and combined with a thick haze of industrial smoke to cover the city. It was the cause of more than 4,000 deaths in one winter.  On November 1, 1952, the first deliverable hydrogen bomb was detonated in the Bikini atoll. Over the next 12 years, many of those islands would be rendered uninhabitable due to fallout from more than 20 nuclear detonations.

1971-1972 Opposition

Long lines at gas stations when gasoline was limited On April 24,1971, 500,000 demonstrators rallied against the Vietnam War in Washington, DC. In June, the Pentagon Papers were published and, one year later, a break-in occurred at the Watergate Hotel, the investigation of which would ultimately lead to the exposure of government corruption at the highest levels and bring down the Nixon administration.

1989-1989 Conjunction

On June 4, 1989, in Beijing, protests in Tiananmen Square turned into a massacre when tanks rolled through the crowd, killing over 2,000 demonstrators on live television.  On March 24, 1989, the tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground, spilling 240,000 barrels -- 11 million gallons -- of oil into the ocean.

2006 Opposition

Iraq, Iran, immigration, bird flu, oil prices, global warming, and more powerful hurricane, volcanoes and earthquakes could all be issues that force our attention and alter out lives. However it is always better to be forewarned and forearmed.

My Hope:

The challenge and potential positive lesson is for reality Saturn to allow us to recognize where we have been into Neptune denial and to face our responsibilities and fears instead of hoping that terrorism, corrupt politicians, open borders and warmer temperatures will resolve on its own.
